Thee next q.f.c.
is not what you'd expect
The next q.f.c. event is happening on March 19th!
Watch and converse with the curious and critical about queer indie media of the last 30 years and the zeitgeist of today. Q.F.C presents VAGINAL DAVIS: AN INTERVIEW (2013) in which the artist reflects on her initiation into the punk rock and art scenes of Los Angeles during the 1980s and 90s. The interview cannot be seen online! Bring your sense of playfulness! Stay for the post-film conversations; prompts provided, or submit your own - I will re-create the live prompt feed / collective archive again to get the casual conversations going. Free Popcorn, Wine and Beverage Provided. Pay What You Can! Get tickets!
I have been writing about & trying to program something like an irreverence for institution series because at queer film club we like to laugh at the human condition. The first set of films engage with the catholic/christian pantheon made throughout the 70s-90s in the U.S., playing with the dichotomies of the overt/covert/explicit/implicit, absurdism/realism, dominance/subservience, and others. You can read pt 1 of my ramblings about the subject here.
So the first film of the series was programmed for March 19th, but it changed at the last minute. Sourcing it there was a bit of drama with the filmmakers which ended up being a very meta lesson on the queer archive, as well as some good chisme..
But anyways–
As the mass production of consumer video tech gave us films by performance artists, in Los Angeles in the 1980’s, artists like Marcus Kuiland Nazario and Vaginal Davis emerged in the scene. The DIY politic in their art was being rejected from the lgbt mainstream, and so that’s where we’ll begin: in the margin.
